Varicose veins are commonly caused when the valve inside the
vessel becomes
damaged. Every time you take a step, the calf muscle pumps
blood out of the
lower leg and back to the heart. These damaged valves prevent
the blood from
being pumped out of the leg normally and cause a "refluex"
to occur.
This is where the blood travels in two different directions at the
same time, resulting in poor circulation.
In the past, surgery was the only treatment
to resolve varicose veins. Today,
the non-surgical technique called "Sclerotherapy"
has made surgery obsolete.
This is an outpatient procedure and requires no
limitations on your daily
activities, requiring no convalescence.
Sclerotherapy is a simple
injection therapy designed to close down the varicose
vein permanently. A
solution called Sotradecol ( Sodium Tetradecyl Sulphate ) is
injected
intravenously into the vessel. This causes the lining of the vessel to "glue"
together and stop the blood from flowing through it. The patient is sometimes
required to wear a compression wrap or bandage for several days to help shut
the vein down completely. This is generally in one to two treatments.
